Because of the ongoing controversy in the public arena in United States, I have decided to revisit the myths of Christianity pertaining to creationism, original sin, intelligent design; and their opposite view, scientifically supported, called the Evolution. Because Sikhism believes in the theory of evolution long before Charles Darwin talked about it, this matter is of utmost importance to us today. Various religious forces whose foundations are rooted against scientific, rational outlook have gathered their momentum to hijack science and are attempting to alter our public policies.
1. Today the biblical foundational myths supported by all the Semitic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) must be given a closer scrutiny. My friend, who uses the pen name of Charles Wallace, has done marvelous work analyzing the bible as against the body of evidences that science has accumulated. Charles Wallace wrote this article is a letterform earlier and then updated it for the benefit of the readers. He addresses the issues in a commendable fashion. Please read his article The Fallacies of Creationism and Original Sin carefully and be open to the matters that are purely myths as opposed to the views supported by the hard facts of evolutions. Once these foundational myths of Christianity are invalidated, it becomes far easier to dismantle the Christ mythology.
2. Recently, Richard Dawkins (professor of public understanding of science at the University of Oxford) produced two video movies. You should know that Prof. Dawkins, who is the author of several books, is a champion of science and has performed a tremendous service to advance science in public arena. Given that his valid views directly conflict with the foundational myths, I think the readers will learn a whole lot and significantly augment their knowledge base just by watching and listening carefully to Richard Dawkins. Mind you, these are priceless videos and we are all indebted to Prof. Dawkins for undertaking this task.
The first part of my paper will examine the creation and flood myths of the Bible as interpreted by the Catholic Church. One cannot understand Christian theology until one understands the relevance of the myth of creation to the Christian doctrine of original sin. Then I will examine what modern science teaches about the origin of the world and life and compare that to the Biblical teachings. Finally, I will demonstrate that the Bible is anything but inerrant, and that the Christian doctrine of original sin is inherently flawed.
