August 3, 2001 -- After the Muslims, it is now Sikhs that have challenged the screening of Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, saying that it was violative of Sikh tenets.
Seeking direction for revocation of certificate and removal of objectionable scenes and dialogues in the movie, a petition prayed for stoppage of screening of the movie till August 9, the next date of hearing fixed by the court.
The petition alleged that the image of Sikhs had been depicted contrary to their religious tenets and history, and showing Amritdhari Sikhs having trimmed their beards have hurt the sentiments of the community.
The petition contended that article 29 (1) of the Constitution gives minorities a right to protect their culture and religion.
A sacred symbol of Nishan Sahib has been shown in the movie being carried by a mob indulging in looting, murder and rape, the petition said.
