Police Commissioner for a Day

This is a story of my son, a young Sikh boy named, Delare Singh Rathour, who just won the “NYPD 106th Precinct Commander for the Day” Award issued to him by The Honorable NYC Police Commissioner Raymond J. Kelly on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at One Police Plaza, NYC, NY.

Delare is a John Adams High School student in Ozone Park, Queens, NYC and he is in the NYC Police Athletic League, and a participant of NYPD Explorer Program that encourages high school student to partake lesson in the judicial and law enforcement. My son works hard to seek further education by attending the “College Now Program” in his high school. He is committed to helping the community with law matters, mostly mentoring young kids to stay in school and stay away from drugs and serving the Gurdawara in the Richmond Hill, Queens’s area.

His mother Amrit K. Rathour told the Police Commissioner Kelly “I am very proud of him and his achievements, one day he might be the NYPD Police Commissioner and help all Indian-Americans achieve safe streets for all religions and cultures.” His father a NYC Correction Officer, working for NYC Department of Correction, stated to Asst. Chief Diaz, “Delare would help lead the further Indian generation into the NYPD.” Also note, Delare is the cousin of Amric S. Rathour, who sued the NYPD and won the rights for Sikhs to wear turbans on the job.
