International Dalit Conference, Vancouver, Canada 2003
In 1998, the first International Conference of Dalits was held in Malaysia. Another mass mobilization of Dalits was held in Durban, South Africa,August 2001, United Nations’ World Conference against Racism (WCAR) where the Dalits pressed for their demand of considering Untouchability/Casteism parallel to racism. After the Durban conference, another Conference, sponsored by the Government of Madhya Pradesh, was held in Bhopal during January, 12-13, 2002, known as Bhopal Declaration 2002.
Second International Dalit Conference 2003 On Dalit Vision for the 21st Century will be held in Vancouver British Columbia Canada at Aston Pacific Inn, Resort & Conference Centre, on May 16-18, 2003. Hon. Shri K.R. Narayanan.Former President of India, agreed to inaugurate the historic Conference.
The conference is planned at very strategic time and place as India is going to face Nation’s Parliamentary General Elections in 2004. Every major political party is bound to concede to Dalits' demands in order to seek their votes. This conference will draft a document and pressure national political parties to adopt the Dalit agenda. Dalit intellectuals, from all over the world, has already begun formulating policies for Dalit agenda. This conference will be a breakthrough in Dalit history.
