Conversing With Reverend Tony Zekveld: Soul
G.B. Singh
Many years of reading, exploring, discussing and debating the Bible has brought me to some degrees of conclusions--that the Bible-based Christianity can be described as a table with four legs and each leg solidly represents the following four Biblical posts: (1) Biblical God, (2) Jesus Christ, (3) Soul, and (4) Heaven. On the table, you can place various issues of interests such as virgin birth, original sin, magic and miracles, prophecies, trinity, resurrection, prayer, biblical patriarchs and prophets, profanities, social and political issues, etc.

Reverend Zekveld and I have undertaken a huge task here to debate the Bible in a friendly dialogue form. Earlier we have discussed heaven, the 4th leg of the table. Today we are looking on the subject of soul. Soul, like heaven, is an important biblical concept and for some unexplained reasons it has bypassed the critical scrutiny of many scholars. Earlier I requested Reverend Zekveld to write a comprehensive commentary on soul. He has been very gracious and his well-written article is posted here for the readers. In addition to the biblical references on soul, he also brought forth Sikh view on soul into perspective and compared it, rightly so, with that of Christianity.
My own comments on the soul (as you will read shortly) are strictly derived from the Bible. To get the proper picture of soul strictly from the pages of Guru Granth, I have asked Dr. Baldev Singh to put a few lines. I encourage the readers to put forward their questions to anyone of us and/or feel free to bring your views into perspective.
In our discussion of soul, my purpose in this article is to compare two different views of the soul: the Sikh view and the Christian view. I also want to let you, the reader, know before hand, that in this article I also presuppose a distinction between humans and all other living beings. The Bible distinguishes man and woman from all other life forms in that man is created in the image of God. The Bible says, "God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them" (Genesis 1:27).
All other living creatures, such as animals, are not created in His image. The uniqueness of man is that God created man and woman to relate with Him, to walk and talk with Him, in other words, to be in covenant with Him. This is what makes a person, a person! In light of the above purpose, I want to focus on three aspects: 1) the origin of the soul, 2) the journey of the soul, 3) the destiny of the soul...more
It sounds easy. All you have to do is open the Bible and read it and there you get your answer. I have done that and quite frankly the answer is not that easy. What soul is all about is important because I have been approached by the evangelists in their genuine interests in saving my soul. After all, once your soul has been saved via Jesus then it is guaranteed a place in heaven.
Just as an evangelist is interested in saving my soul, I am equally persistent in asking what soul is according to the Bible. From thereon, invariably, the conversations goes on and on without getting the answer that I was hoping to get, namely, What is soul?
