Breaking Silence

Imagine a place, where silence is broken by morning songs of the birds; by a mid-day call to prayer; by the evening aarti of Praise, and where the stillness of the night is broken by the ecstasy of sacred music for the soul.

Imagine a world, where the general well being of all people is not just a debate but a dedicated personal commitment and a major national goal.

Imagine a place, where the festival of Life is a celebration of community spirit in all its richness; the fulfillment of our individual potential and shared vision is a solemn commitment.

In this place, there are no secret closets that hide the countless acts of shame, outrage, and inhumanity, which cause unbearable pain and untold suffering to the human spirit. It is free of assaults on human decency, silent indignities, unprovoked hostility, and crimes against children and the defenseless. Discrimination and prejudice, unjust laws, violations and denials of fundamental human and sacred rights, and other unfortunate problems find no sanctuary.

In this place, there is an incredible openness. There are no walls that separate people. “Winds of culture” flow freely. Diverse ideas, thoughts and learning are recognized and encouraged. Distinct ethnic and spiritual traditions are honored and celebrated. Freedom and dignity of each individual is considered a sacred trust and a basic right. The welfare of each citizen is a major and cherished responsibility.

In this place, surrounded by unbounded love, children grow, learn, play and dance on the “Seashores of Life” without fear. Here adults understand their rights, freedoms, individual and collective responsibilities to the nation and to each other. The seniors are a respected and valued segment of society.

In this place, the rule of just laws transcends all differences and divides. There is a growing spirit of unity among people, cultures, faiths and traditions. It recognizes the unmistakable universality in the human spirit. Community leaders and institutions honor and strengthen the full spectrum of community diversity.

In this place, we marvel at Nature, and proudly follow her lead. The life-giving rain, air, the beautiful sunshine, the Light of heavens, and the boundless bounty of Nature bless all, without limit, malice or distinction. Here suffering is not ignored and special needs and interests of all citizens are met. A Canopy of Hope and Promise spreads justly over all creation.

Is there truly such a place? The truthful answer: at this moment of deafening global rancor, confrontations and terrible uncertainties, it is only a vision. Together we can and we must hope, pray, imagine, search and shape a peaceful world for all. With our prayers, songs, chants, reflections and soul searching, we can affirm, further and magnify the spirit of oneness as children of one Creator God. We must extend that message to others outside this sanctuary, to the farthest reach of our imagination. Each of us is an instrument of God’s love and benevolence and a messenger of hope, healing and service to others.

Let us be a candle of Light and Hope to one another. Dispel darkness, end the cycles of violence, bring comfort and healing and lift up the fallen and the forgotten. We can make a difference. We must break our silence about the evils, injustices and deprivations of basic essentials needed for human survival. Let us abandon all entrenched cultural, ethnic, religious and social intolerance and ignorance. Let us build bridges of knowledge, hope and understanding and travel across them in freedom and friendship. Be kind to the environment. It nurtures our mind and spirit. “Nature is the Resting Place and the Crown of God.”

Let us encourage, share, and celebrate the best in each of us. Let an enlightened spirit guide and enrich our imagination and experience. Imagine a world at peace where children play in safety and freedom along the “seashores” of old and the new frontiers. Let us ask what can be done to make such a dream possible in our lifetime.

We are at an unimagined crossroads in human history. Let us imagine our place on this journey. Focus on the destination. All dreams, destiny and future hopes begin here, now and with each one of us. The Father of all creation will take us from there.
